# Two Phase Approach

The group separates data management into two phases because the needs are different before and after publication. During active research, the main task is to keep projects structured enough that the work can be checked, continued, and prepared for release. After publication, the task changes: the material has to be shared in a form that outside readers can cite and use.

#### Phase 1: Internal Replication Practice

The first phase is internal. Projects are stored in a standard structure, reviewed inside the group, and gradually shaped into replication packages that are complete enough to survive revision, handover, or reanalysis. Material in this phase does not have to be publicly visible, but it does need to be organized, documented, and stored in a way that another researcher can follow. This is the phase where most of the real work happens: deciding what must be preserved, checking which files are missing, and making sure published figures can still be traced back to simulation output.

**Phase 2 – Open Access**

The second phase begins once a project is ready to leave the group. At that point, the package should move from internal storage to a repository or portal that can provide persistent identifiers, stable access, and a clearer publication record. Not every project will become fully open immediately, because embargoes, IP constraints, or collaboration agreements may still apply. Even so, the long-term direction is the same: a package that has already been made coherent internally is much easier to publish well.
